Flaming Gorge Reservoir is 91 miles long and has over 360 miles of shoreline making it the perfect place to explore by paddle. Launching a canoe, kayak, or stand up paddleboard into its deep blue water can lead to an awesome experience.

A slot-like chasm with waterfalls About the Hike: Next door to busy Multnomah Falls but usually overlooked by tourists, this delightful trail explores a cavern behind Ponytail Falls and then loops around Oneonta Gorge, a mossy chasm so narrow that Oneonta Creek fills it wall to wall.

  • Slot Canyons of the American Southwest - Bull Valley Gorge, Utah In the hilly, wooded country around the upper Paria River valley, Bull Valley Gorge is a relatively well known canyon, yet quite far from a paved road.
  • The Gorge of King Xorbb, also known as the Beholder's Maze, is a narrow collection of gulleys and ravines that are very similar to those in Highpass Hold.Unlike its southern neighbor, this area has much less friendly occupants.
  • The slot canyons found at Cathedral Gorge are undoubtedly the main event, with miles of trails that wind in, around and through this striking landscape. Hike from Miller Point Overlook—a gazebo that was originally constructed by the CCC and serves up incredible sunrise or sunset views of the slot canyons below.

Flaming Gorge has multiple launching points, some developed and others primitive, that will give you access to numerous paddling routes. You can choose to head out for multi-day trips, camping in primitive sites on the shore, or take day trips from the inlets and marinas. Most of the marinas and lodges surrounding the lake offer hourly rentals of kayaks and stand up paddleboards making things very convenient.

Kayaking and stand up paddleboarding are fast-growing sports. Paddling on the reservoir is a skill that is easily learned and allows you to explore at your own speed. All the excursions above are open to beginners with some level of fitness. For young explorers try a tandem kayak and have them share paddling responsibilities with an adult. If you love water, viewing wildlife, and exploration, paddling the lake is definitely for you.

FACILITIES & AMENITIES

Camping: The campground has 22 sites, each with a table, grill and shade ramada. Electric hookups are also available. Sites cannot be reserved. Water and flush restrooms with showers are open year-around. Facilities adjacent to the campground offer large shade ramadas, grills, picnic tables and water. There are two handicapped-accessible campsites at the group area that also have a restroom with flush toilets and showers. Camping is limited to 14 days in a 30-day period.

Group Area: Accommodations for day and overnight groups are available by reservation.

NATURAL RESOURCES/CLIMATE

The spires and buff-colored cliffs are the result of geologic processes occurring over tens of millions of years. The beauty enjoyed today had violent beginnings, starting with explosive volcanic activity that, with each eruption, deposited layers of ash hundreds of feet thick.
